PARAMORE: Pop / Rock Stalwart Drops Infectious New Single

Pop / Rock Stalwart Drops
Infectious New Single

I don't typically create entire
feature stories based on just a
single. However, for this one,
I had to make an exception.

In the ever-fickle, unpredictable, topsy–turvy, world of pop / rock, a four-year gap between records is an eternity. However, when the brand is as strong as Paramore, rebounding from an extended break can be a snap — with the right song, the right producer and the right video, of course.

Led by fashion-forward frontchick / matriarch, Hayley Williams, the latest configuration of Paramore dropped their latest single, "Hard Times" on April 19th. Written by Williams and perennial guitarist Taylor York, this super-catchy lead-off track from the upcoming album, After Laughter, caused quite a cyber stir, immediately upon the video's YouTube debut.

Overseen by current golden boy producer, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, "Hard Times" sounds like cotton candy — as if Alanis Morissette is fronting Maroon 5 on a track produced by El Debarge. The video is equally amazing — an eye-catching treasure that looks like a magical bowl of electrified Skittles.

Much of the online hoo-ha seems to stem from the track's gloriously over-the-top poppiness — clearly troubling longtime fans still clinging to the band's long-lost signature-style punkiness. As a mere casual admirer, even I can recognize that the train heading from Hot Topic to mega-stardom left the station a long time ago. And if "Hard Times" is any indication of the new record's overall direction, Paramore will soon close the deal on total global domination.
