RECORD REVIEW: Candy Striper Death Orgy "Nitromethane"

CANDY STRIPER DEATH ORGY

Screaming Ferret Wreckords

The disclaimer on the band's official website speaks volumes No trend following here! And boy, ain't that the truth.

As an old school speed/thrash fan from the '80s, I confess that I have difficulty connecting to the current nĂ¼-metal genre — "followers" indeed. So for a guy who invested so much of my life back in the day listening to such bands as Nuclear Assault, Dr. Know (Wreckage in Flesh version), Overkill and the Joey Belladonna version of Anthrax, I can recognize without a doubt that this record is the real deal!

Candy Striper Death Orgy's authentic sound should come as no surprise given that guitarist and vocalist Eric Paone founded the band back in 1988. And over the years they've honed their craft, sharing concert stages with the likes of such speed kings as Nuclear Assault, Overkill, Testament, Biohazard, Gwar and Coroner.

founder, Eric Paone.

"We have gone through several line-up changes," confesses Paone. "Most of the time, people would leave due to how much work you have to put in."

But Paone's hard work, dedication and persistence paid off as the band's all-New England-boy line-up, which also includes lead guitarist Jon Morency, bassist Dave Ulrich and drummer Graig Marseglia has remained intact for the last several years.

As for Nitromethane, the record originally was released in 2009 — only recently finding its way to my mailbox. And what a treat it is. Opening with the mind-melting "World War III," the four song collection clocks in at a mere nineteen minutes. It offers impeccable musicianship — the songs are well-constructed and it is extremely well-produced. I've always been  a real "lyrics guy" and although Nitromethane smacks of Nuclear Assault's influence, Paone's vocals are far more distinguishable than John Connelly's ever were — kudos!

In sum, these admitted hard-core, hard-rockin' drag racing aficionados  nail it to the wall. And in a day when many fans hunger for the glory days of true-blue, neck-breaking, classic-style thrash, Nitromethane certainly hits the spot. http://csdo.net/
