Whether you're signed with a major publisher, a boutique start-up, or going completely independent, the responsibility of promoting a book release lies squarely on the shoulders of the author.
Through the experience of releasing my debut in 2010, I learned first-hand, some of the ins and outs of book promotion.
Although the amount of time spent devoted to blogging, social networking and other online efforts often can prove to be a mind-numbing (yet very necessary) process, I find other aspects of book promotion to be quite enjoyable. And I eagerly was anticipating the opportunity to hit the promo trail once again in 2012, supporting my second book, C'MON! -- My Story of Rock, Ruin and Revelation.
I've had a blast recently doing in-the-studio and phone-in interviews on various radio stations. Show hosts thus far have been quite enthusiastic about C'MON! and seem to connect with my story. Listener call-ins also have been a lot of fun.
However, it's the live, one-on-one book signing experience that I find particularly rewarding. On my first in-store tour in 2010 I met many teenagers who were less impressed by my rock and roll exploits and more interested in the fact that I was an author. It was refreshing to connect with young people who shared my passion for reading and writing.
My first live promo event for C'MON! took place this past week. I was a bit nervous going onstage that night as I hadn't done a proper book signing since the end of my first tour in November 2010. Also, this particular event was being held in, of all places, a nightclub called Siggy's, located in Palm Bay, Florida. That's right -- given the ever-changing world of publishing, I'll be meeting, greeting and signing books in a variety of venues in 2012, from traditional bookstores to churches, and yes, even a few bars!
I'll continue to apprise my blog readers of upcoming events and appearances as they are scheduled throughout 2012.
